Legal protection
An order of protection is a court order that tells an abuser to stop harming or threatening you. There is no filing fee, and advocates at many courthouses can help you fill out the paperwork for free.
Can be granted the same day, without notifying the other person first. Lasts up to 21 days.
Granted after the other person has a chance to respond in court. Can last up to two years.
Filing usually starts at the circuit clerk's office. Court advocates can guide you through it.
